A Message from Buck
The B Street Theatre’s Family Series programming seeks to not only entertain young audiences, but also inspire them to ask challenging questions and discuss important issues through live theatre. Lois Lowry’s The Giver is a novel famous for provoking young people to think and explore. The B Street Theatre’s production of Eric Coble’s powerful stage adaptation strives to provide an opportunity for families to engage in meaningful discussions about the important themes introduced by Lowry’s cautionary tale. We hope your family leaves with greater insight of the world, our community and each other.

Welcome to our Family Series Resource Page! The resources below will enhance your family's theatrical experience and can be used as an introduction to the elements of the current production.

The Giver
Through this astonishing and moving adaptation, discover what it means to grow up, grow wise and take control of your own destiny. Jonas lives in a perfect world devoid of war, fear, pain...and choice.
Everyone is assigned a role in the Community by the Elders and must live out
predetermined lives. When Jonas turns 12, he is chosen to be trained by the Giver to
receive the memories of the people and the past: memories that hold the pain and
pleasure of life. It is time for Jonas to discover the truth and determine his own destiny.
Recommended for ages 8 and up.

From the Author
The Giver - and the two books that follow it make a trilogy (soon to be a quartet! I’ve just finished the fourth book!), Gathering Blue and Messenger - take place against the background of very differ- ent cultures and times. Though they are broader in scope than my earlier books, they nonetheless speak to the same concern: the vital need of people to be aware of their interdependence, not only with each other, but with the world and its environment.
“I am a grandmother now. For my own grandchildren
- and for all those of their generation -
I try, through writing, to convey my passionate awareness that we live intertwined on this planet
and that our future depends upon our caring more, and doing more, for one another.”
