What is the School Tour?
Founded in 1986, B Street Theatre School Tour performs 12 times per week, 38 weeks per year in schools, hospitals and public places reaching approximately 200,000 children annually. Since its inception, the School Tour has played for over three million children in Northern California (including the counties of Amador, Calaveras, Contra Costa, El Dorado, Nevada, Placer, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Solano, Sutter, Yolo and Yuba). The performances are a great way to introduce children to live theatre by expressing the art of telling stories on stage.
In California, all schools must implement the State's curriculum standards for Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) at every grade level. The B Street School Tour performances, and the accompanying teacher study guides, can help students meet these requirements. Depending on the play, we are also able to target curriculum standards for History/Social Sciences, Math, and Science.
Performances typically run approximately 45 minutes and can take place in a variety of venues such as auditoriums, gymnasiums and cafeterias. The tour has also played at hospitals and other non-school venues. We make a concerted effort to take the rich experience of theatre into underserved communities throughout the region. In Sacramento and San Joaquin counties alone, the School Tour has played to more than 130 Title I schools just in the last couple of years.
In addition to producing professional
touring productions, B Street Theatre holds an annual playwriting festival and contest for students. The Fantasy Festival was created to provide a forum for the dramatic voice of youth and to assist children in developing literary skills, problem solving techniques, and a mode of artistic expression. This process stimulates the intellect and enhances self-esteem by providing validation of creative ideas and work efforts. Selected plays are performed during the Spring School Tour, and a special public performance is held at B Street Theatre in Sacramento.

THANK YOU so much for the incredibly entertaining, educational, and creative play for our students! As always, it is a highlight of our year, and we get so excited anticipating your arrival. Many teachers voiced their positive comments about the performance, saying it was your best yet! I could never choose only one---I've loved them all…. know that your visits get a HUGE reaction for all our students when we announce your assembly. I also read your email info on standards and activities, and discussion points etc. and it was VERY impressive and thorough!

Your performances never cease to entertain and enlighten the minds of our students, and this year's performance rose to our expectations, yet again. In my three years at this school, the assemblies for B Street performances are the best and most enjoyed by students. The students talk about them after the fact and cherish the shared experience with their peers.

My fourth graders were enthralled. 45 minutes is a long time to sit on the floor, and I saw nary a twitch. They were completely engaged. They gasped, they giggled, and they laughed out loud.
