Founded in 1986, B Street Theatre School Tour performs 12 times per week, 38 weeks per year in schools, hospitals and public places reaching approximately 200,000 children annually. Since its inception, the School Tour has played for over three million children in Northern California (including the counties of Amador, Calaveras, Contra Costa, El Dorado, Nevada, Placer, Sacramento, San Joaquin, Solano, Sutter, Yolo and Yuba). The performances are a great way to introduce children to live theatre by expressing the art of telling stories on stage. In California, all schools must implement the State's curriculum standards for Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) at every grade level. The B Street School Tour performances, and the accompanying teacher study guides, can help students meet these requirements.
Performances typically run approximately 45 minutes and can take place in a variety of venues such as auditoriums, gymnasiums and cafeterias. The tour has also played at hospitals and other non-school venues. We make a concerted effort to take the rich experience of theatre into underserved communities throughout the region. In Sacramento and San Joaquin counties alone, the School Tour has played to more than 130 Title I schools just in the last couple of years. In addition to producing professional touring productions, B Street Theatre holds an annual playwriting festival and contest for students. The festival was created to provide a forum for the dramatic voice of youth and to assist children in developing literary skills, problem solving techniques, and a mode of artistic expression. This process stimulates the intellect and enhances self-esteem by providing validation of creative ideas and work efforts. Selected plays are performed during the Spring School Tour, and a special show-case performance is held at B Street Theatre in Sacramento. “This is to give a SHOUT OUT and THANK YOU to B Street Theatre and everyone who had a part in bringing this wonderful experience to my students. To say that they loved B Street Theatre and the actors/actresses, is an understatement. The company connected so well with my students, took time to answer their questions, and were great examples of working towards making your personal dreams come true.” - Charlotte Chadwick, Principal, John Bidwell Elementary School, Sacramento

“We are always amazed by the performances. They are so engaging. The students and staff can not keep our eyes off of the characters. As teachers we really appreciate the instructive language that increases the student’s exposure to interesting vocabulary without leaving them in the dark. The kids get joy and fun along with the growth. Today my first grade class wrote some dialogue for a play and were all excited thanks to your troupe. Bravo!” - Ann Bodnar, Teacher, Heritage Oak Elementary School, Roseville
“I want to thank you so much for coming to Kohler Elementary. The majority of our students would not have had the opportunity to see live theater had you not come to our school. I was sitting with one little boy, whose family I know well, who couldn’t contain his laughter. That in itself was worth it.” - Leslie Cohen, Student Learning Coach, Kohler School, Sacramento Thank you to our B Street Theatre 2011-2012 School Tour sponsors:
